Maureen Sale has had great success with her young dog Potterdale Miami Sun (Potterdale Paddington x Ch Potterdale Propaganda) in obedience classes over the last year. We would like to thank Maureen for doing such a fantastic job in promoting our Kennel and Beardies in this very difficult and demanding field.

POTTERDALE <cityw:ston><placew:ston>MIAMI SUN NOV EX (16/4/2003 XS and eye tested)

(Potterdale Paddington - Ch Potterdale Propaganda)

I have owned and shown Bearded Collies since 1982 and have always loved them as they are such individual characters and can be loads of fun and so versatile.

Over the last five years there as been an increasing trend in obedience to work 'Beardies' from farm stock and there are now less than a handful of show bred Beardies working in open obedience in the <country-regionw:ston><placew:ston>UK, mainly in the lower classes. I am thrilled to bits that Sonny has been able to demonstrate that the show dogs are still fully versatile and capable of working -  and that they lack the opportunity rather than the ability.

Apart from his successes in the show ring, Sonny has proved his worth as a potential farm dog when he was 18 months and we spent a weekend in Cornwall on a sheep herding course, he passed the Senior Working Test when he was 2, and last year after winning  BIS at Midshires BCC and a first at Crufts, Sonny won a number of first prizes in obedience classes at exemption shows and was overall winner of the Midlands 20th Anniversary Pentathlon . We therefore entered our first open obedience competition in April this year not really expecting to do anything as open obedience is dominated by Border Collies and it is notoriously difficult to win in Novice.  I was therefore truly amazed when Sonny came 2nd at our first show losing by only a quarter of a point behind the winner - a lady who had won the Supreme Obedience Championship at Crufts!

In May at Loughborough Championship Show, Sonny was one of three dogs on the same mark who topped a class of 60. After a long hot day we therefore had to work the whole round again to determine the winner, resulting in Sonny coming a very creditable second.

Over the next few months Sonny picked up awards at most of the shows he attended and won his first Novice in a class of 46 at Liverpool Victoria show in July giving him the remaining points to qualify Nov Ex. On this occasion Sonny was one of 5 leading dogs all on the same mark who had to work the round again, but this time I was thrilled to bits when Sonny was awarded the first prize- the judge describing his round as 'stunning'.

The Kennel Club have recognised the level of difficulty in winning out of an obedience classes and introduced obedience qualifications similar to those in Working Trials. The Obedience Excellent qualification is awarded by the Kennel Club for any dog gaining a minimum of 20 points - 10 for a first, 4 for a second, 2 for a third, and 1 for a fourth place.

I am delighted that Sonny has now won 3 first prizes in Novice classes and has amassed 50 KC points!  Sonny won his second first place with clear (faultless) heel free, recall and retrieve at the Border Collie Club of Wales, and won his a third Novice Class at Lichfield Championship Show at Drayton Manor Park - despite the distractions and screams from the adjacent rollercoaster and rides!

Sonny is now eligible to work Class A and B in obedience. It has been many years since a show dog has achieved this standard. Obedience dogs generally work until they retire usually at 10 or 11 so that hopefully we will be able to progress further and find the time to fit in some breed championship shows as well next year.

I am immensely proud of Sonny and all his achievements, he has a super temperament and loves working whether its agility, obedience or sheep work.
